The Ethos of Jesus - Week 1

Sharable notes for the February 18, 2024 message. You can post these notes on your social platform!

Scriptures used: Matthew 5:1-20; Galatians 3:19-24
Passages Referenced: Romans 12:1-2

  • When we choose to follow Jesus Christ we receive his righteousness which is greater than our own self-righteousness.

  • Christ came to represent an ethos of grace and truth.

  • Religious activity and conformity are too often a mask of phantom faith than they are of godliness and devotion to Christ. Don't let that be the case.

  • The Beatitudes are statements that show the kind of characteristics that will be produced in the disciple who live a life devoted to a heavenly kingdom - the ethos of Jesus.

  • Jesus demonstrated an upside down nature that was in direct contrast to the world.

  • At the root of self-reliance is a prideful spirit. We cannot be full of ourselves and full of God at the same time.

  • When we are full of pride our life becomes an endless cycle of comparison and competition. We become self-focused and self-promoting. We become ungrateful and entitled.

  • Our walk with Christ must begin with and continue in a posture of great need.

  • When you become passionate about God, then you will not only be fulfilled, you will also be a life giving person.

  • Value being right with God above anything else.

  • Jesus called his followers salt and light which means you are a change agent, a divine influencer in this world. This ethos is not about personal fulfillment, it’s about kingdom impact.

  • Our life should point to the soul preserving grace of Christ that purifies our heart and our life, creates a thirst for more of his spirit in our life, softens our hard hearts and heals our souls.

Reflect or meet with someone to discuss:

  • How do you think the beatitudes describe who Jesus was and who he wants his followers to be? Do you typically feel blessed in being that kind of person?

  • What does it mean to be salt and light? How have you seen people being salt and light before?

  • What do you understand better about Jesus and the culture he came to establish by looking at the beginning of the sermon on the mount in Matthew 5?
