Passages referenced: James 1:13-16; Luke 7:20-23

  • Delay isn’t denial. Until you have a clear no, keep praying.

  • Our motives matter to God, because our motives reveal our heart.

  • Our faith must be in Christ and Christ alone, and we must trust him.

  • Don’t let desires deceive you to conceive sin.

  • God may want to use you to demonstrate that it is possible to hold onto to God’s word even when everything in you is going the opposite way.

  • We may not be seeing the answer we want, not because we don’t have enough faith, but because - in a way that we may very well never understand - God is working something in us and through us that has a far greater eternal value than our temporary happiness.

  • The cross is our constant reminder that God has not abandoned us. He gave his life so that we would never be abandoned.

  • We can be guaranteed that 100% of the prayers we don’t pray will never get answered.

Reflect or meet with someone to discuss:

  • Have you ever felt like God wasn't answering your prayers? What caused you to feel that way?

  • Do you have trouble understanding why God answers prayers the way he does? What's your biggest struggle?

  • How does it encourage you to think that Jesus prayed for the cross to be removed from his life but it wasn't? When you see the bigger picture and the eternal perspective of the cross, does it help you to see that there may be a bigger picture behind your prayers being answered the way they are?

Have you ever felt like your prayers went unanswered or ignored? Is there a reason they didn’t “work”? No matter what your prayer life looks like, it can be easy to overthink prayer or become frustrated. But Jesus’ relationship with His Father gives us an approachable and practical look at a life of prayer.
