Scriptures used: 1 John 4:7-12, 16-21; Proverbs 17:17, 27:17; Matthew 5:43-46, 22:36-39; 1 John 2:15; 1 Corinthians 13:4-8, 13

  • There are different levels of love. We may use one word but love has different levels of depth.

  • Original biblical language has 4 different words for love with 4 different meanings that show the different levels of depth.

  • Eros love is a romantic love. This is not to be confused with lust. This is a committed and passionate love shared between husband and wife.

  • Storge love is a family love. It's an empathy bond that you see between parents and children. The church body shares this love with one another because we are the family of God.

  • Philia love is a friendship love. It's a rare and valuable love that comes from a unique bond and and connection with one another.

  • Agape love is an unconditional love. This is the highest form of love demonstrated by Christ. Agape is a selfless love that loves regardless of circumstances.

Reflect or meet with someone to discuss:

  • Why do you think we have such a hard time explaining and expressing our love?

  • How does seeing the different levels of love expressed from the Greek help you think about love differently?

  • How can you get to a level of agape love that you are able to express with others?
