Scriptures used: Matthew 5:6-7; Romans 1:16-17; Galatians 5:17; James 1:14-15,21-22,25; Ephesians 2:4-5; Romans 1:29-31, 12:2; Ephesians 2:1-3, 8-10; Matthew 9:13; Hebrews 4:16; Lamentations 3:22-23; Micah 6:8; Psalms 86:15

  • Righteousness is more than outward morality. It is a deep and sincere inward transformation that is revealed by the fruit of the Spirit working in our lives.

  • Our pursuit of righteousness as followers of Christ is not out of legalistic duty, but from a heart that cries out “I wanna be more, I need to be more like Jesus."

  • We do not live in a merciful world, but mercy is what Jesus has called us to show.

  • The church must be a place of mercy because we understand that we are here today because of God’s mercy.

Reflect or meet with someone to discuss:

  • Do you ever find that your pursuit of faith is more out of duty than a longing for more of Christ? What steps can you take to change that?

  • What is your view of mercy?

  • Do you struggle showing or accepting mercy? Why do you think that is?

  • Do you struggle accepting the mercy Christ wants to show you?

When Jesus presented the truth of the gospel, he also healed. He built relationships. He offered mercy. Yet today we often focus on truth at the expense of mercy or on mercy at the expense of truth. May this week-long devotional remind you that God’s first impulse toward us today is still mercy. And it is the first impulse we are to have toward others as we present truth—just as Jesus did.
