Scriptures used: Luke 2:8-20; John 1:5,14, 10:1, 8:12, 20:1; James 4:8; Philippians 2:14-15; Matthew 5:14-16

  • “Advent words – waiting, watching, listening, longing, yearning, hoping, looking back, staying awake – some of the hardest words to do in the English language.”

  • We have the promise in our life that the Lord is near to us, and we can hold onto that.

  • What we have found in Christ should move us to share His good news.

  • Jesus wants you to shine within the darkness.

  • The announcement that the world's hope, Jesus, had been born happened in the dark. The savior of the world would be crucified in the dark. The empty tomb would be discovered in the dark. You never know how God could be working in your darkest time.

  • Even if it seems dark around you, you do not live in darkness. You live in the light of Jesus and we must go forward proclaiming His good news and shining that light.

Reflect or meet with someone to discuss:

  • How do you typically handle times in your life that feel like dark times?

  • What does it mean to you to know that the biggest moments of Jesus' life happened in darkness?

  • How can you still shine His light even in dark times?

In the midst of health concerns, economic uncertainty, and civil unrest, it's easy for our brains to succumb to fear and even despair. But as Christians, God calls us to be people of hope. No matter what is happening, we can choose the mindsets that move us from despair to hope and take the actions that shift us from surviving to thriving.
