Seeing Through the Fog Week 1

Sharable notes for the April 24, 2022 message. You can post these notes on your social platform!

Scriptures used: Genesis 2:25; 3:7; Hebrews 4:12-16; 12:2; Luke 8:40-48; Joshua 5:9
Passages referenced: Colossians 3:1-3

  • Guilt says, I did something bad. Shame says I am someone bad.

  • “Shame is the deep sense that you are inherently flawed, unacceptable, and unworthy of love because of something you’ve done, something done to you, or something associated with you.” Ed Welch

  • Three important questions to consider when looking to overcome shame - Where are you? Who told you that about you? Are you heeding God's instructions?

  • We were created to be known and loved. Sin has caused us to think that we can only be one or the other.

  • Jesus disregarded the shame of sin and embraced the cross so that you wouldn’t have to live under the weight of shame.

  • You have to be honest about where you are to know where you’re going.

  • Your spiritual enemy is an accuser. He starts with what you did or what was done to you (guilt), and he’ll tear down who you are (shame). Let Christ lift your head and call you his child. He’ll declare who you are in him and make you new.

  • God forms his church from broken people, declares us a new creation, commissions us with a purpose, and equips us with his power.

Reflect or meet with someone to discuss:

  • Have you struggled or are you struggling with shame in your life?

  • What has the shame come from? Was it something you've done, something done to you, or a situation beyond control?

  • Who can you talk to today about the shame you're dealing with to begin to find freedom?
